Dr. Al-Kalaa is a leading voice in wireless healthcare innovation, with a distinguished track record at the intersection of medical devices, regulatory science, and next-generation wireless technologies.
With over 15 years of experience spanning federal research, standards development, and real-world healthcare deployments, Dr. Al-Kalaa has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of connected medical technologies. As a Senior Member of IEEE and a senior wireless scientist at the U.S. FDA, he has led nationally recognized initiatives on 5G-enabled healthcare, contributed to FDA guidance on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and helped establish testing frameworks now recognized across the medical device industry.
Throughout his career, Dr. Al-Kalaa has bridged partnerships with key organizations, including NIST, NSF, the VA, MDIC, and ANSI. These collaborations have contributed to major advancements in wireless coexistence, spectrum etiquette, and emerging healthcare technologies. At Inovectrum, Dr. Al-Kalaa brings this depth of expertise to empower innovators navigating the complex challenges of wireless integration, regulatory compliance, and healthcare connectivity. His mission: to enable technology that enhances patient care, reduces risk, and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in connected health.
His leadership roles and key achievements include:
- Led multimillion-dollar projects that enhanced the FDA’s capability to evaluate emerging healthcare technologies, resulting in increased regulatory efficiency and broader patient access to innovative devices.
- Founder and Co-chair of the MDIC 5G-enabled Medical Device Initiative, conducting high-level discussions with industry leaders to drive 5G innovation in healthcare.
- Represented the FDA to NITRD‘s Wireless Spectrum Research and Development (WSRD) initiative, participating in national efforts to advance spectrum sharing and wireless technologies.
- Vice Chair of Subcommittee 7 – Spectrum Etiquette under the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C63, advancing evaluation frameworks for wireless technology.
- Mentor for the NSF Ideas Lab Program — Breaking the Low Latency Barrier for Verticals in Next-G Wireless Networks, providing strategic guidance and innovation insights.
- Workgroup Secretary for ANSI C63.27, where he oversaw the publication and FDA recognition of wireless coexistence testing methodologies.
- Consulted on hundreds of medical device submissions (e.g., 510(k), De Novo, PMA, IDE), providing expert insights on wireless technology and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
- Expert in risk management standards for wireless technology and EMC in medical devices, including IEC 60601-1-2, ANSI C63.27, AAMI TIR69, and ISO 14971.
